THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF THE RED CROSS

As members of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the American Red Cross and other national societies have a key role in upholding and abiding by the seven Fundamental Principles.

Humanity: The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavors, in its international and national capacity, to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongst all peoples.

Impartiality: It makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. It endeavors to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by their needs, and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress.

Neutrality: In order to continue to enjoy the confidence of all, the Movement may not take sides in hostilities or engage at any time in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature.

Independence: The Movement is independent. The National Societies, while auxiliaries in the humanitarian services of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain their autonomy so that they may be able at all times to act in accordance with the principles of the Movement.

Voluntary service: It is a voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by desire for gain.

Unity: There can be only one Red Cross or Red Crescent Society in any one country. It must be open to all. It must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory.

Universality: The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, in which all Societies have equal status and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other, is worldwide.

Army Hearing Program

Mission

To promote army readiness, quality of life and reduce incidence of noise-induced hearing loss through a state-of-the-art hearing loss prevention program across Fort Bragg installation.

Scope of Services

The Army Hearing Program (AHP) per provides information on hearing, hearing loss prevention, hearing protection, DOEHRS-HC, hearing monitoring, and reducing noise hazards. The AHP consists of four components:
·        Hearing Readiness is designed to ensure Soldiers have the required hearing capability to perform their job-specific duties, as well as the appropriate and properly-fitted hearing protection devices for their mission. The primary purpose of hearing readiness is to identify early changes in hearing and provide education, individual counseling, and hearing protection to prevent damage to hearing. A key element of hearing readiness is monitoring audiometry, which is conducted with the current DOD-approved microprocessor audiometer system comprised of the Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System-Hearing Conservation (DOEHRS–HC) software application, the current DOD-approved audiometer, and the DOEHRS–HC Data Repository (DR) Web-based Application. All Soldiers are required to undergo an annual DOEHRS–HC audiogram. Monitoring audiometry data is made available through Medical Protection System (MEDPROS), thus providing the capability for monitoring and tracking of hearing for both individual and unit-level hearing readiness.

·         Clinical Hearing Services are intended to determine a Soldier’s auditory fitness-for-duty (FFD) by determining the degree and cause of hearing loss and measuring a Soldier’s hearing ability against a performance or medical standard. Clinical hearing services for at risk DA Civilians who are exposed to hazardous noise are intended to determine work-relatedness of hearing loss. After degree and cause have been determined, treatment and management plans can be initiated. Treatment plans may include medical or surgical intervention, prescription of personal hearing aids, assistive listening devices, aural rehabilitation, tinnitus management, new hearing protection or monitoring of the condition for changes.

·         Operational Hearing Services focus on preventing or mitigating NIHL during military operations while maintaining or facilitating the Soldiers’ ability to communicate. Operational hearing services focus on noise assessment and abatement strategies, improved communication, and the use of specialized hearing protection devices, such as non-linear and linear dual-function earplugs designed to reduce the impact of noise and NIHL on military operations. Tactical Communications and Protective Systems (TCAPS) are designed to amplify low-volume sounds and facilitate face-to-face and radio communications while simultaneously protecting the ear from hazardous impulse noise (such as, weapons fire). These types of devices protect hearing in both operational training and combat environments while allowing Soldiers to maintain their ability to hear and communicate, especially in dismounted operations.

Hearing conservation - For many years, the AHP served as the flagship for the prevention of noise-induced hearing loss. The hearing conservation component of the AHP is industrial-focused and is instrumental in preventing NIHL in primarily fixed-facility work environments. HC efforts are conducted in support of both the DA Civilian workforce and Soldiers working in industrial-based settings. While HC requirements continue to exist in their previous form and function, they now serve in concert with additional AHP components to provide comprehensive hearing loss prevention and hearing health promotion program.

Army Wellness Center, Fort Bragg

Mission

Army Wellness Centers provide integrated and standardized primary prevention programs and services that promote enhanced and sustained healthy lifestyles to improve the overall well-being of Service Members, their Families, Civilians, Retirees, and Eligible Contractors.

The Army Wellness Center (AWC) programs help build and sustain good health. AWC Health Educators and services empower individuals to set their own health goals and achieve them. AWC programs and services address lifestyle change in areas that affect both short- and long-term health, engaging people in their “life space”—the places where they live, work, relax and rest.

ServicesServices

AWC offers the following programs and services:

  • Heath Assessment Review
    • The foundation of the AWC Core programs that include a series of assessments and questionnaires to determine the current level of an individual’s health and identify the changes that will be necessary to reduce risk factors for disease prevention, and ability to increase physical activity safely

  • Body Composition Analysis
    • Body fat percentage is a value that tells you how much of your body weight is made up of fat.  Knowing and tracking your body composition rather than a number on a traditional scale is a better indicator of health. The AWC utilizes the BOD POD, known as the practical gold standard in body composition testing
    • The BOD POD uses air displacement to measure fat and fat free mass and can accommodate a wide range of populations. A full test requires only about 5 minutes, and provides highly accurate, safe, comfortable, and fast test results
    • Appointment Preparation:  No food, exercise, drink, or nicotine for 5 hours prior to appointment; All clothing material MUST be spandex, lycra, or nylon (men: spandex, compression shorts, speedo / women: spandex bottoms (have to be above the knee), compression shorts with sports bra that does not have pads or metal, or bathing suit without pads or metal)
    • Complete the Health Assessment prior to your appointment at the following link: https://awc.army.mil
  • Physical Fitness Testing
    • The Physical Fitness Assessment focuses on Health related physical fitness components (cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition, muscular fitness (strength and endurance), and flexibility) which have strong relationships with good health, characterized by an ability to perform daily activities with energy, and are associated with a lower prevalence of chronic disease and health conditions and their risk factors
    • Results are used to create individualized exercise prescription to help you achieve your goals
    • Appointment Preparation:   No food, exercise, drink, or nicotine for 5 hours prior to appointment
    • Complete the Health Assessment prior to your appointment at the following link: https://awc.army.mil
