Specialty Behavioral Health offers higher levels of care through the Intensive Outpatient Programs and through inpatient psychiatric services at WAMC 6 South. Other specialized services include Substance Treatment and the Service Member Justice Outreach Program. ProceduresDuring duty hours, the patient is seen by their assigned behavioral health clinic for evaluation (see description of clinics). If the staff at the clinic believes that the patient has a condition best treated in an inpatient environment, they refer the patient for hospitalization. The referring staff member then contacts the ward to discuss the case with the Staff Psychiatrist on-duty for possible admission. The patient is then transported to WAMC for further evaluation and treatment at ward 6S, where the staff orients the patient to the ward. After duty hours, the soldier is seen at the Emergency Department for evaluation. The Emergency Department staff gathers information and assesses the nature of the presenting problem and contacts the Psychiatrist on-duty. The on-call Psychiatrist provides consultation to the emergency room physician on the most appropriate disposition and directs admission, if required. While a Soldier is in the hospital, it is incumbent upon the Chain of Command to check on the Soldier's status. This is best accomplished by visiting with the Soldier and engaging the 6S treatment team. Communication between the unit and the staff provides vital information to aid in the Soldier’s evaluation, treatment, and reintegration back into the unit or other disposition. Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a 30 - 45 day program designed specifically for Active Duty Service Members who are experiencing behavioral, emotional and addiction difficulties, but who do not require (or no longer require) the intense level of psychiatric care provided by inpatient or residential hospitalization programs. IOP is ideal for stabilizing individuals with acute mental health or addictions that may be at risk for hospitalization, or who may be "stepping down" from a hospital stay. Intensive Outpatient Program provides a co-occurring comprehensive treatment program among a therapeutic community of peers. IOP intensity can help to maintain abstinence, increase mental health and improve quality of life. Group therapies are used to promote coping skills, stress management, goal achievement and treatment compliance. Our goal is to empower each person to move to their "best" self and thereby learning new ways to cope with stress, anxiety and depression. All our groups and sessions are geared to treating the underlying causes and help facilitate recovery. Combination of group therapy, individual therapies, family therapy and medication management (as medically indicated) has been validated by research to be one of the most effective forms of treatment for mental disorders. Click here for the IOP Brochure.
Behavioral Health IOP (BHIOP)This program is designed for Service Members who have been discharged from the Inpatient Psychiatric Ward or who need additional therapy outside of the normal behavioral health services. This IOP meets five days per week for four weeks, five hours per day from 0800-1400 (with a one hour lunch break) at the Womack Health and Support Center (WHSC). The group is a closed session limited to approximately 10 members. A new group with up to 10 additional members will start approximately every four weeks. The focus of the group is to provide intense psychoeducation on crisis stabilization, resiliency skills, medication and symptoms management, and health issues management (e.g. sleep hygiene, pain management, nutrition awareness and substance abuse). This group will capture SMs discharged from acute in-patient hospitalization and/or outpatient BH Patients in need of a higher level of care. Trauma IOP (TIOP)This program is designed for Service Members with symptoms directly related to a trauma such as PTSD or Sexual Assault. The TIOP meets five days per week for four weeks, six hours per day from 0800-1300. The group is a closed session limited to approximately 10 members.
