Behavioral health issues do not discriminate: they can occur in anyone’s life. Whether you are active duty, family member or other beneficiary, behavioral health care at Womack Army Medical Center is delivered in a compassionate manner designed to aid in recovery. Individual or group counseling is designed to help patients get through life’s behavioral challenges.

Womack's Department of Behavioral Health is comprised of three Service Lines, organized by the care recipients served and services offered. The Family Member Service Line provides care to military dependents, including children and adolescents. The Service Member Behavioral Health Line provides general outpatient and subspecialty behavioral health care for active duty, to include millitary specific occupational evaluations and command consultation. The Specialty Behavioral Health Line is responsible for inpatient behavioral health care services and intensive outpatient (IOP) care for adults.

Jointly, the Behavioral Health Service Lines are responsible for identifying, developing, monitoring, and refining clinical care, outcomes and applicable clinical pathways across the continuum of Behavioral Health Care.

Internal Behavioral Health Consultants
Behavioral Health consultants are located at Patient-Centered Medical Homes, Soldier-Centered Medical Homes and Community-Based Medical Homes serving Active Duty, Retirees and Families to provide brief assessment and Behavioral Health services in collaboration with the patient's primary health care manager (PCM).

For more information, see your PCM or call the Womack Appointment Line at (910) 907-APPT.

Specialty Behavioral Health

Provide the highest quality specialty behavioral health care by offering a spectrum of intensive treatment programs tailored to the needs of the service member, within the broader Army system of clinical care.

Specialty Behavioral Health offers higher levels of care through the Intensive Outpatient Programs and through inpatient psychiatric services at WAMC 6 South. Other specialized services include Substance Treatment and the Service Member Justice Outreach Program.

Procedures

During duty hours, the patient is seen by their assigned behavioral health clinic for evaluation (see description of clinics). If the staff at the clinic believes that the patient has a condition best treated in an inpatient environment, they refer the patient for hospitalization. The referring staff member then contacts the ward to discuss the case with the Staff Psychiatrist on-duty for possible admission. The patient is then transported to WAMC for further evaluation and treatment at ward 6S, where the staff orients the patient to the ward.

After duty hours, the soldier is seen at the Emergency Department for evaluation. The Emergency Department staff gathers information and assesses the nature of the presenting problem and contacts the Psychiatrist on-duty. The on-call Psychiatrist provides consultation to the emergency room physician on the most appropriate disposition and directs admission, if required.

While a Soldier is in the hospital, it is incumbent upon the Chain of Command to check on the Soldier's status. This is best accomplished by visiting with the Soldier and engaging the 6S treatment team. Communication between the unit and the staff provides vital information to aid in the Soldier’s evaluation, treatment, and reintegration back into the unit or other disposition.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a 30 - 45 day program designed specifically for Active Duty Service Members who are experiencing behavioral, emotional and addiction difficulties, but who do not require (or no longer require) the intense level of psychiatric care provided by inpatient or residential hospitalization programs. IOP is ideal for stabilizing individuals with acute mental health or addictions that may be at risk for hospitalization, or who may be "stepping down" from a hospital stay.

Intensive Outpatient Program provides a co-occurring comprehensive treatment program among a therapeutic community of peers. IOP intensity can help to maintain abstinence, increase mental health and improve quality of life. Group therapies are used to promote coping skills, stress management, goal achievement and treatment compliance.

Our goal is to empower each person to move to their "best" self and thereby learning new ways to cope with stress, anxiety and depression. All our groups and sessions are geared to treating the underlying causes and help facilitate recovery. Combination of group therapy, individual therapies, family therapy and medication management (as medically indicated) has been validated by research to be one of the most effective forms of treatment for mental disorders.

Click here for the IOP Brochure.

Behavioral Health IOP (BHIOP)

This program is designed for Service Members who have been discharged from the Inpatient Psychiatric Ward or who need additional therapy outside of the normal behavioral health services. This IOP meets five days per week for four weeks, five hours per day from 0800-1400 (with a one hour lunch break) at the Womack Health and Support Center (WHSC). The group is a closed session limited to approximately 10 members. A new group with up to 10 additional members will start approximately every four weeks. The focus of the group is to provide intense psychoeducation on crisis stabilization, resiliency skills, medication and symptoms management, and health issues management (e.g. sleep hygiene, pain management, nutrition awareness and substance abuse). This group will capture SMs discharged from acute in-patient hospitalization and/or outpatient BH Patients in need of a higher level of care.

Trauma IOP (TIOP)

This program is designed for Service Members with symptoms directly related to a trauma such as PTSD or Sexual Assault. The TIOP meets five days per week for four weeks, six hours per day from 0800-1300. The group is a closed session limited to approximately 10 members. A New group with up to 10 additional members will start approximately every four weeks. The TIOP Resiliency model focuses on core-mindfulness, strengthening distress tolerance skills, emotional regulation skills and interpersonal effectiveness skills for better long-term physical health and emotional well-being.

Addiction Meds IOP

This program is not active and is in the process of being stood up. Start date is TBD.

What is Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapy is a dynamic profession with an established theoretical and scientific base and widespread clinical applications in the restoration, maintenance, and promotion of optimal physical function. Physical Therapists are autonomous health care professionals who help individuals maintain, restore, and improve movement, activity, and functioning, thereby enabling optimal performance and enhancing health, well-being, and quality of life. Physical Therapists evaluate, diagnose, and develop comprehensive treatment programs that can include exercise programs, instruction in self-care, use of physical and therapeutic agents, posture modification, and prevention of further overuse injury. Physical Therapy Assistants implement selected components of patient/client interventions (treatment), obtain data related to the interventions provided, and make modifications in selected interventions either to progress the patient/client as directed by the physical therapist or to ensure patient/client safety and comfort under the Physical Therapist supervision.

Physical Therapy services prevent, minimize, or eliminate impairments of body functions and structures, activity limitations, and participation restrictions.. Physical Therapy is provided for individuals of all ages who have or may develop impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions related to (1) conditions of the musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular, pulmonary, and/or integumentary systems or (2) the negative effects attributable to unique personal and environmental factors as they relate to human performance.

ARE YOU A CANDIDATE?

co-morbidities such as Type 2 diabetes, hypertension or hyperlipidemia.
To view the BMI Chart click here.

If you meet these criteria, please contact your PCM for an appointment to discuss the possibility for surgery and referral.

Types of Procedures Offered

We offer four types of weight loss procedures at Womack Army Medical Center:

  • Sleeve Gastrectomy
  • Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
  • Gastric Banding
  • Duodenal Switch

Sleeve Gastrectomy
The Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy is a restrictive form of weight loss surgery where approximately 85% of the stomach is removed. The part of the stomach that is cut away is responsible for producing the hormone, grehlin which is partly responsible for stimulating hunger. This surgery is NOT reversible.
This surgery is not approved for patients wishing to be seen by surgeons outside of a military treatment facility.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
The Roux-en-Y procedure involves creating a small stomach pouch and attaching it directly to the small intestine, bypassing a large part of the stomach and duodenum. This new stomach pouch is approximately 30cc (the cap that comes with Nyquil) which will hold only small amounts of food. The food will then bypass the duodenum which is responsible for most of the fat absorption.

Lap Band (Gastric Banding)
Is a procedure that places an adjustable band around the top portion of the stomach to create a smaller pouch. A port is placed beneath the skin to allow a certified bariatric doctor access to either inflate or deflate the band. This weight loss procedure works purely by restriction. While lap banding is a reversible procedure, it is not an easy one.

Duodenal Switch
In this procedure, a larger portion of the stomach is left intact, including the pyloric valve that regulates the release of contents from the stomach into the small intestine. The duodenum is divided near this valve, and the small intestine divided as well. The portion of the small intestine connected to large intestine is attached to the short duodenal segment next to the stomach. The remaining segment of the duodenum connected to the pancreas and gallbladder is attached to this limb closer to the large intestine. Where contents from these two segments mix is called the common channel, which dumps into the large intestine.

What is Centering All About?

It's all about Group

You will be in a group with other women whose due dates are close to yours. In each of the ten sessions, you will have a private time with your health care provider and some refreshments. Then you'll meet as a group to discuss questions, concerns, and solutions.

It's all about Self-Care

You'll learn to take your own blood pressure and weight and enter the information into your charts. You'll receive information and tools to help you make healthier choices for you, your baby, and your whole family.

It's all about Women

You'll meet other expectant moms and have an opportunity to share stories and learn from one another. You'll be able to talk about health issues that are important to you and all the things you're going through--physically and emotionally. You'll be together every month at first, then, as the birth of your baby approaches, you'll meet every two weeks.

It's all about Time

You'll receive a schedule of all the group times before you even begin. This makes it easy to arrange childcare or meet work obligations. You won't need to enroll in separate childbirth classes-- you'll cover everything in your group! Every minute of your time will be occupied, not spent sitting alone in a waiting or examination room.

A New Way to Receive Prenatal Care

Centering is an exciting way for women and their families to get prenatal care. Women spend more time with their health care provider and with other pregnant women, which gives them a chance to learn a lot more about pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting.
Check-ups, support, and education all takes place in a group setting.

LEARN - about your baby, your body, childbirth, and parenting.

JOIN – other expectant moms, partners, and support people to discuss pregnancy problems and solutions with them in a group setting or over refreshments.

TRACK - your baby’s growth and your own pregnancy progress.
